This George Lucas is not the famous, recently retired film director and producer. Instead, he is a not-really-very-famous academic, specializing in military ethics and the ethics of emerging military technologies, as well as in modern European and American philosophy.
This “alternative universe” George Lucas is President of the original chapter of the International Society for Military Ethics, North America (www.internationalsocietyformilitaryethics.org), and has assisted in establishing related chapters of the Military Ethics Society in Europe (headquartered at the French Military Academy: www.euroisme.org), as well as in Africa (Cameroon) and the Pacific Rim.
In philosophy, he is a past president and current Secretary-Treasurer of the Metaphysical Society of America, a philosophical group founded by Yale philosopher Paul G. Weiss in 1952. Lucas is also General Editor of the Critical Edition of the works of Alfred North Whitehead, a well-respected mathematician and philosopher at Harvard University (https://edinburghuniversitypress.com/series-the-edinburgh-critical-edition-of-the-complete-works-of-alfred-north-whitehead.html).
Dr. Lucas is Visiting Distinguished Research Professor at the John J. Reilly Center for Science, Technology and Values at Notre Dame University, and Distinguished Chair of Ethics Emeritus at the U.S. Naval Academy and the Naval Postgraduate School. Beginning in August 2016, he will serve as the senior ethics professor in the U.S. Department of Defense, holding the Vice Admiral James B. Stockdale Chair of Ethics at the U.S. Naval War College (Newport, RI).
